Hood Hargett

David. L. “Chuck” Hood, Jr. is a Tar Heel born and bred – as well as a native Charlottean.  After graduating from East Mecklenburg, Chuck attended the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, where he graduated with a degree in Economics.  While at Chapel Hill, he was awarded membership in Phi Beta Kappa.

Hood Hargett was formed in 1975 with Dannie Hargett and Chuck Hood as partners.  Hood Hargett moved to its current location at 132 North McDowell in 1985. Mr. Hargett retired in 1988. The agency has grown to become one of the areas largest independent insurance firms serving commercial and personal clients throughout the United States.

Chuck and his agents are known for their community service – including sponsorship of the Hood Hargett Breakfast Club – Student Athlete Scholarship Program.

Chuck has severed and chaired numerous boards and received awards including:

• Board of Directors and Board of Trustees for the Alexander Youth Network, including one year as Chairman.
• Board of Managers of the Dowd YMCA
• Chaired the Dowd YMCA Outreach Golf Tournament, which raised $110,000
• Board of Trustees of the Greater Charlotte Metro YMCA.
• Founding Board Member of New Dominion Bank
• Former President of Carmel Country Club
• Member of the Charlotte/Mecklenburg Police Foundation Board
• Board member of The First Tee of Charlotte
• Served 10 years on the Board of Trustees for Charlotte Country Day School, including three years as Chairman
• Co-chaired Charlotte Country Day School capital campaign, which raised over $33 million.
• Charlotte Country Day created The “David L. Hood, Jr. Service Award” in Chucks’ honor – and, fittingly, he was its first recipient.

Chuck has two sons both who followed their father and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill, David who works with his father and Sammy who works for Hawthorne Capital Partners in Charlotte.

Skip Tappy has called Charlotte, NC home since 1977. He received a BS in Business Administration from Appalachian State University in 1995. Graduation from ASU led him to Raleigh, NC where he worked briefly in the Reinsurance Department for a Life Insurance Company before moving back to Charlotte in the spring of 1996 to join Hood Hargett & Associates. During his 14 year career with Hood Hargett Skip has worked to counsel both individuals and businesses on their insurance programs. He finds great satisfaction in helping his customers protect their financial well being while building a personal relationship with each customer. One of Skip’s most gratifying professional accomplishments is the relationship he has formed with over 75 area local non-profit organizations serving as their insurance advisor. Outside of the non-profit sector, Skip works with businesses of all types and sizes and enjoys meeting business owners and learning what has made their business successful.

Skip lives with his wife Jeanne and their two sons Owen and Greyson. He has played an active role on several non-profit Boards of Directors, Community Associations and Church Committees. In his free time, Skip enjoys spending time with his family, coaching baseball for the South Park Youth Association and following his favorite sports teams including the Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Braves and ASU football.

John Forste grew up in Simsbury, Connecticut and graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in Psychology in 1995. His insurance career began over 14 years ago in Connecticut and led to him working for two of the more prominent insurance carriers in the industry in The Hartford and Travelers. The experience he gained as a Commercial Lines Underwriter and later as a Sales Representative helped him acquire the insight into what insurance companies are looking for in their ideal customer. This insight helps John consistently deliver the results his customers are looking for.

John joined Hood Hargett & Associates in 2008 and made a seamless transition into working directly with business owners and individuals on their insurance programs. He earned his Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation in 2007 and is active with the National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research. John contributes his success to his philosophy of maintaining a strong work ethic, listening to his customer’s needs and providing unparalleled customer service.

Brian Cowan has called Charlotte, NC his home since 1980 and received a BS in Business Administration from North Carolina State University in 2001. He joined the Hood Hargett Team in 2003.

He is a member the Charlotte Association of Health Underwriters. His professional passion and areas of expertise include working with companies to develop sensible and comprehensive employee benefits programs and working with individuals on personal health, life, disability and long-term care insurance.

Brian utilizes a consultative approach by partnering with his client’s to assure they get the most for their money.

He is currently engaged to his fiancé Mary Jane and has two sisters and parents who live in Charlotte. Brian enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf with friends, and supporting his Carolina Panthers football team.
